Grizzly Flats sits near 4,000 feet in the forest south of Pollock Pines, and it is a town in the middle of being rebuilt. Early on August 17, 2021 the Caldor Fire ran through and destroyed roughly two thirds of the community, the post office and the school among the losses. About 1,200 people lived here before that morning. New houses have gone up on burned lots every year since, and the Grizzly Flats Community Services District, the town's water utility with around 600 active connections, serves each lot as it comes back online.
